Hey Beautiful Lady!

This morning as I sat down to look in my makeup mirror, our new kitten, Ophelia jumped up on the bathroom counter. When I saw her, I greeted her with, “Good morning beautiful lady!” As I turned my eyes back to the mirror and saw my own face, for a split second it was as if it had been a greeting for myself. It felt good. Just as quickly, my inner voice corrected that warm, self appreciating feeling and reminded me of my wrinkles, the bags under my eyes and my rapidly reproducing grey hair. The shift in my temperament was palpable. Enough so that it made me wonder, why don’t we greet ourselves like that in the morning? Why do we let what society has taught us is beautiful reign over our feeling of self love? Botox and Snapchat filters have filled us with completely unrealistic expectations of how we should look and feel. We need to search past all that is “supposed to be” about our faces and smiles. Let’s look deeper at the faces filled with love that our children have grown up seeing, the faces our friends look to for support and laughter and the faces our pets adore and are so happy to see. Let’s see what our partners see. We need to look at the faces of our souls. Those faces are of course the only ones that truly matter. I’m certain that a day that begins with seeing your own soul’s beauty, will make for a day that you feel beautiful, in spite of what society has programmed us to think of ourselves. Seeing and sharing the beauty of our souls would have to make for a more beautiful world indeed.

I am a woman who is at the point in her life where she needs to find herself and discover her likes and dreams. My husband and I have raised three boys and I have found myself at a point of self discovery.
